Poverty Eradication: Microfinance Support Centre Gives Out Pigs to Groups in Rukungiri
Government of Uganda through the Microfinance Support Centre over the weekend handed over 150 pigs to 63 groups under Rukungiri Producers Cooperative Union in an effort to eradicate poverty and create income generation avenues amongst the locals.
The pigs were given as seed capital, however, each group will be returning 2 piglets to the breeding centre per litter for three years.
MSC is setting up a modern Piggery breeding Centre where they will get high quality breeds and also good quality drugs and advisory. The Centre will be managed by MSC in partnership with the Union.
According to the Executive Director MSC John Peter Mujuni, the main objective of this initiative is to encourage the youth and people of Rukungiri to embrace diversification and tap into other sources of income in order to survive during calamities or when some markets are low.
This is also one of the measures MSC has come up with to restore jobs of the small businesses that were pushed out of work by Covid-19.
“I also call upon you to save even when your incomes are low. Because the small savings of many people, when accumulated, can finance development in the communities. Start small with whatever size of capital, and grow. That is the natural way,” he said.
“The President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni has tasked the Micro-finance support Centre which i lead to organise communities and promote wealth. We have already covered most parts of Uganda, and we are going back soon to avail the funds as directed by H.E the President,” Mujuni further explained.
Lastly, the youth who are not in animal breeding Mujuni implored, should embrace the emyooga progamme which will enable enterprises in the same trade to access low cost capital.
Emyooga funds will be given to 18 clustered Saccos in all constituencies across the country.
