Kampala Air Quality Improves by 60% During Lockdown

National Environmental Management Authority [NEMA] has revealed that air quality over Kampala City improved by 60% during Lockdown.

‘’We have been monitoring the air quality of Kampala since last year. When Covid-19 started, we realize the air quality of Kampala became fresher by 60%’’ Says Dr. Tom Okurut the NEMA Executive Director.

Okurut made this revelation on Friday at a public forum meant to commemorate World Environment day from Mulungu Island.

He attributed the improvement to the decreased traffic on the city roads.

NEMA spokesman Mr. Tony Achidria says the body is well equipped with air quality monitoring machines at NEMA House and places around Kampala that monitors the quality of the air around the city.

In April this year, AirQo, a specialized air monitoring centre based at Makerere University also released the Air quality report between March 2020 and April 4.

The report indicated that the air quality had improved by 40% during the lockdown period up to April.

The AirQo report however said there still a lot that needs to be done to reach standard level recommended by the World Health Organization which is 25gm-3.

Kampala gets most of its Pollution from the heavy traffic, home pollution and factories around the city.
