Relegating Katwe United Was Unfair – Allan Sewanyana

Katwe United proprietor Allan Sewanyana has blamed his team’s relegation to the Regional League on football politics with in the local football governing body, FUFA.

The Makindye West Member of parliament express discontent at the Federation’s decision to end the FUFA Big League prematurely following the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

FUFA invoked the 75% rule to determine the teams that gained direct promotion to the Uganda Premier League and the ones which sunk to the third tier.

According to the Sports shadow minister, the decision made by FUFA targeted his side and is a pure manifestation of politics within football in the country.

“No team in the FUFA Big League had played 75% of the games, the highest had played 67% and relegating my Katwe United is unfair.” Sewanyana expressed dissatisfaction via social media.

By the time FUFA cancelled this season, Katwe United had accumulated Nine points, placed at the bottom of the Elgon group.

FUFA however based its ruling on the following provision in the handbook;

“Where all teams in the league have completed the first round fixture but less than 75% league games have been played, the table standings at the end of the first round shall be considered as the final table standings of the league.”

In this case, at least one club (Nyamityobora Football Club) had played 12 out of 16 matches (75%) Article 18(c) of the FCR is applied and the table standings adjusted accordingly hence the first round table was considered.

UPDF Football Club and MYDA FC which topped the Rwenzori and Elgon groups respectively, sportingly qualifed for the top league come 2020/2021 season.

While Four clubs including Kitara, Kataka, Kiboga Young and Ndejje University will vie for the third promotional slot through the play-offs before the start of the 2020/2021 season.
