Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga: If you are asking whether I have got the qualities to be President I think I do have them

Buganda Premier Charles Peter Mayiga says he has the qualities to be President.

Premier Mayiga appeared on NTV political show Spot On on Thursday night.

Moderator Patrick Kamara asked the premier whether he has the ambition to lead your country beyond leading as the Katikkiro.

Premier Mayiga whose articulation of issues on the show was hailed the viewers, said: “At the moment the ambition I have is to lead the kingdom on behalf of the King. If you are asking whether I have got the qualities to be President I think I do have them.”

When asked on the talk about being a Muganda and the myths traded about them wouldn’t affect his chances, he said: “The point shouldn’t be about a Muganda in name rather a competent one.”

Mayiga, a lawyer, explained: “What Uganda needs is the rule of law and good governance. The president could be a Muganda or anybody but the state should have good governance.”

He singled out former Uganda President Godfrey Binaisa who led the country in 1979 after the collapse of Iddi Amin regime.

Mayiga, who has been premier for seven years, said: “We had Godfrey Binaisa here, a Muganda but he wasn’t hinged. Every country has its own political dynamics. Binaisa was a joker! The time for a Muganda to be president will come.”

He noted:”Where did Nyerere come from? To say that why isn’t a Muganda simplistic. Mandela was Xhosa ahead of the Zulus. Obama was black, are blacks more than other races?”

Mayiga argued: “Uganda having one President for over 30 years has nothing to do with Buganda Kingdom. The issue is not about having a Muganda at the helm of politics in this country, it has also everything to do with Competency to adequately execute the oath of office.”
