Wakiso Giants Players, Staff Agree on Three Month 50% Pay Cut

Uganda Premier League entity Wakiso Giants has become the first club to agree on a pay cut during this global COVID-19 pandemic.

Leading by example, the Purple Sharks have agreed with club management on a 50% pay cut from their salaries for three months of March, April and May to enable the club to achieve its wage promises.

As the players sympathize with the fans, the pay cut share will be given back to the loyal fans who have been standing together with the club since its maiden 2018-2019 season.

The development was confirmed by the club’s head of corporate affairs, Ismael Kiyonga in a phone call interview on a local radio station.

“Our players and staff proposed to the management and thought of giving back to the loyal fans who have been supportive of the club since our debut appearance in the 2018-2019 season in the FUFA Big League,” said Kiyonga.

He added, “the 50% portion deducted from their salary won’t be retained by the club but instead getting back to the fans during this Coronavirus lockdown and it’s a way of easing people’s lives through this tough situation of the forced lockdown.”

Earlier this week, Kitara Football Club head coach Mark Twinamatsiko also accepted a 50% pay cut to give it back to his players as a way of helping them go through this crisis.

Uganda has so far registered 45 cases of Coronavirus without any death case reported.
