Rights Commission Concerned About Rights of Marginalized Groups
The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has expressed concerns over the challenges faced by vulnerable and marginalized groups during the COVID19 lockdown.
Speaking to journalists at Uganda Media Center on Friday, the UHRC acting Chairperson Katebalirwe Amooti Wa Irumba called on Government to give support to the marginalized groups of persons who are facing multiple challenges under the lockdown.
“The disadvantaged and marginalized groups are severely affected by the current crisis. The elderly, People with Disabilities (PWDs), those with pre-existing health conditions and compromised immune systems such as HIV/ AIDS patients, pregnant women; these vulnerable people are particularly affected by the current conditions,” said Katebalirwe.
He added that the marginalized groups are facing challenges especially in accessing treatment during the current COVID 19 lockdown.
The PWDs he said are at a risk of contagion and therefore need much support.
Besides these groups, the UHRC boss also expressed concern over continuing land evictions despite Government halting them.
The Lands Minister Betty Kamya on April 16th 2020 halted any land evictions and transactions across the country.
Despite the halt, Katebalirwe said evictions are still going on.
“The Commission is concerned about the plight of people who continue to be evicted from their land despite the Government ban on evictions during lockdown period.”
