IGAD Staff to Contribute Shs 370m to fight COVID-19
The workers of the regional body, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have contributed USD$ 100,000 (Shs 376m) to give to Uganda to help in combating Coronavirus.
The development was revealed on Monday morning by the IGAD Communications Consultant, Sharon Kuku.
She said the money will be given to the Ministry of Health.
“The staffs of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have mobilized their contribution of Shs 376,000,000 – equivalent to $100,000 to the Republic of Uganda through the Ministry of Health COVID-19 Taskforce towards the fight against COVID 19 in Uganda,” said Ms. Kuku.
The IGAD Migration Expert, Ms. Lucy Daxbacher, is expected to be handover the money, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of IGAD; Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu and the staff, to the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Acheng on Monday.
We have understood the staffs are making the similar contributions to all the other six IGAD member states including Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, Djibouti and Somalia on the same day.
Uganda has by Sunday evening registered 52 cases of COVID-19, mostly imported from the United Arab Emirates, Europe and America.
President Museveni on Friday appealed to the people and organizations with the capacity and willingness to contribute to Government Taskforce to help in preventing the spread of the highly contagious disease.
Government has put in place infrastructure to monitor quarantine, tracing of all travellers who mainly travelled through Dubai from mind-March and people they have gotten in touch with. Government is footing the cost of testing and treating of the patients and people with similar symptoms.
Over 3,000 people have so far been tested for COVID-19.
