Covid-19: UPDF Arrests Three for Brewing Waragi

The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces, UPDF on Saturday night arrested three people for brewing Waragi, which was destined to Rwanda.

The authorities in the district recently banned the production and sale of the local distil to neighbouring Rwanda where is on high demand, so as to control the frequent illegal border crossings that increase the risk of spreading Coronavirus.

The arrested include Laban Tumwekwase, the owner of the brewing plant, Arinaitwe Peter and Byokubara Justus from Mukarangye Parish in Katuna town council, Kabale District.

These are all detained at Katuna police post.

The suspects were netted red handed by the military patrol who are deployed along the borders to stem the influx of Rwandans in the country, which was being reported over and over again by people living in a long border.

Besides Waragi, Kabale district leaders have imposed a ban on cross-border trade in beans.

Last week Lt. Col. Robert Nahamya, the commander of the 19th battalion in Kabale categorically warned people along the borders to stop business dealings with Rwandans until the coronavirus pandemic phases out.
