W.H.O Declares COVID-19 A Pandemic

With more than 121,000 cases across 114 countries confirmed, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak of Coronavirus a global pandemic.

The World Health Organization has been careful in the words it has been using to describe the spread of COVID 19.

Officials worried that such serious categorization could discourage people from trying to contain the deadly disease.

Despite those concerns though, the World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at W.H.O headquarters in Geneva on Wednesday finally declared COVID 19 a pandemic.

“W.H.O has been assessing this outbreak around the clock and with deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity and by alarming levels of inaction.”

“We have therefore made the assessment that COVID 19 can be characterised as a pandemic,” said Ghebreyesus.

Coronavirus was first declared by People’s Republic of China in Wuhan city late last year.

It has since spread like wild fires covering all continents on Earth and has left more than 4,000 people dead.

China is the worst hit by the pandemic in the world while Italy is the worst hit on the European continent.

Iran is the most affected with the biggest number of cases and deaths in the Middle East.

In Africa, COVID 19 cases have been confirmed in 11 countries including Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Tunisia, Togo, South Africa, Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon Burkina Faso and Democratic Republic of Congo.
