MPs Want Special Intervention for Single Mothers

Members of Parliament have appealed for special intervention for single mothers whom they say are economically and emotionally struggling with children without the assistance from their fathers.

The House on Tuesday received a report on the Reporting Obligations on the Status of Women in Regard to the 64th Session of CSW (Commission on the Status of Women) and Implementation of UNSC Resolution 1325, Uganda case, read by the State Minister of Culture, Peace Mutuzo.

Mutuzo told legislators that Uganda has made great strides on the empowerment of women in the country and eradication of gender based violence, which adversely affect women physically and psychologically.

Legislators however, noted that a lot still needs to be done in the country to empower women, and more importantly, single mothers.

Kampala Central MP, Muhammad Nsereko said the country is registering increasing numbers of single mothers who left to fend for their children without the presence of the men who impregnated them.

“Honorable colleagues we have seen a good number of single mothers in our communities. Single mothers are managing more than they can handle,” said Nsereko.

Kawempe South MP, Latif Ssebagala gave the similar submission and urged his colleagues to think about a special intervention for the increasing single mothers.

Meanwhile Nsereko wants men to be held responsible for the children they produce with women they have not settled with and the measure should include attaching their wages.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

A functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was established by UN Economic and Social Council resolution 11(II) of 21 June 1946.  The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
