FIFA Women World Cup U-17: Uganda Progresses to the Second Round

The Uganda U-17 Girls’ national team booked a place in the next round of the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers after easily overcoming Ethiopia at the preliminary stage.

The Khalifa Ayub coached side won 3-1 against Ethiopia on Sunday in Bahir Dar which confirmed their progress to the first round with a 5-1 aggregate score.

Skipper Juliet Nalukenge continued with her fine form by bagging a brace while Margaret Kunihira added the other to guide Uganda to victory, Ethiopia’s consolation goal was scored by Alegash Kalsa.

Uganda will now face Tanzania who edged Burundi 1-0 on Saturday to qualify with 6-1 on aggregate in the next round of the competition.

In Bujumbura, Protasia Mbunda gave Tanzania the lead in the 43rd minute and they went on to shut out their hosts to set up a second round date with their northern neighbours Uganda.

The winner between Uganda and Tanzania will play the winner between Cameroon and Sao Tome and Principe for the ticket to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup slated for November in India.
