Walking against corruption is not enough to fight the vice, says MP Nsereko

Kampala central Member of Parliament Muhammad Nsereko has said that the anti -corruption walk is a good thing that should be embraced.

President Museveni is this week expected to lead a walk through the city centre as the anti-corruption unit headed by Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema marks one year.

While appearing on NBS Television’s Morning Breeze on Monday, Nsereko said there is need for more efforts, other than walking to stamp out corruption in Uganda.

“The gesture of awareness is good. We now have to sit down and see how to stop corruption. For as long as you get someone into a job and is not accountable to you, things will rot. The greed that surrounds the people that serve this government leaves a lot to desire. Museveni needs to stamp nepotism out of this country,” Nsereko said.

The Kampala central legislator, however, credited Museveni for talking right on corruption but requested hım to ‘walk the talk’ going forward other than ‘walking the walk’.

Nsereko noted that the walk against corruption scheduled for Wednesday might not score internally in the country but will be credited internationally because it seems well-intentioned.

He said that corruption in Uganda starts from the biggest vice of nepotism and lack of accountability, something the legislator said the President should fight.

In his walk on Wednesday, Museveni will lead the country in another anti-corruption walk to highlight the gains made in the fight against corruption but also announce new plans by government to fight the vice.

“The walk, starting at 8am will be held under the theme ‘’a corruption-free Uganda; it starts with me” will see the President walk from the Constitutional Square in the city centre to Kololo Independence grounds,” the anti-corruption unit said recently.

The distance from the city centre to Kololo independence grounds is about four kilometres and the President will be joined by other government, civil society, traditional and religious leaders as part of Uganda’s participation in the global recognition of the Anti-Corruption week under the theme “promoting accountability for national development”.
