Onyango, Okwi out as Caf trims shortlists for 2019 Awards

Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango and striker Emmanuel Okwi have been left out as the Confederation of African Football reduced the shortlists for the 2019 Caf awards.

Onyango had been nominated among the Caf Player of the Award and the Inter-Club Player of the year while Okwi had been considered for the latter only.

The shortlist for the Men’s biggest award now has ten names that include among others Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, Senegal’s Sadio Mane and Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Tanzania’s Mbwana Samatta, Kenya Women national team coach David Ouma as well as the national team have also been left out of the shortened lists.

According to CAF, the shortlists of nominees were decided upon by votes from a Caf technical and development committee and a panel of media experts.

The final phase of voting for the men’s and women’s African Player of the Year, as well as the male and female Coach of the Year, will be selected by head coaches or technical directors and the captains of senior national teams from Caf’s member associations.

The Interclubs Player of the Year will be decided upon by the head coaches and captains of the group phase of the current African continental club competitions.

The winners will be announced during the CAF Awards ceremony on 7 January in the Egyptian resort of Hurghada.

  • Thembi Kgatlana (South Africa and Beijing Phoenix FC)

  • Kodjo Fo Doh Laba (Togo and Renaissance Berkane/Al Ain)

Youth Player of the Year:
