Jacob Oulanyah urges KCCA to fix potholes, says that they are biggest contributors to traffic jam

The deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah has expressed concern about the seemingly increasing potholes on the city roads, adding that they contribute a big deal to traffic jam.

The recent rains in the country have exposed a number of loopholes in the quality of Kampala city roads with patches washing away almost weeks after being worked on.

Now in a tweet on his verified handle, Oulanyah expressed concern and called upon Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to work on them as soon as possible.

“The way potholes have increased on almost all the roads in Kampala. Now they are the biggest contender to the causes of traffic jam,” Oulanyah said in a tweet.

In 2010, an independent survey revealed that our of 89 roads in Kampala, 73 have potholes with Lumumba Avenue having the highest number of potholes which were 249 in total at the time followed by the Buganda Road stretch with 245 potholes.

These have continued to enlarge and many citizens have been left wondering whose responsibility it is to repair the roads.

Even the roads where works have been on going, a number of the patches have been seen being washed away after a few weeks.

KCCA reacts

Acting executive director for KCCA, Andrew Kitaka (Eng.) told media that their team is currently engaged in periodic road maintenance.

He said that they face a challenge of finances since the Uganda Road Fund (URF) slashed the funding which he says, used to supplement road works and maintenance in the city.

In reply to the Deputy Speaker’s concerns, KCCA also said in a tweet that they are now intensifying maintenance works across all the divisions in the city.

“We are intensifying maintenance works across the city divisions. We ask the public to bear with us as the team starts to work in shifts for 24 hours a day,” the tweet from KCCA reads.
