Ugandan Local Contractors Urged to Be Reliable To Meet Required Standards

The Minister of Trade and industry Amelia Kyambadde has urged local contractors to be vigilant and well informed of the tender opportunities in the country.

This was during the launch of the first ever Uganda Contractors and Providers Summit which is slated for November 12-13 at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

Speaking at the event, Minister Amelia tasked the local contractors to deliver on time, quality and as well as quantity so as to meet the required standards.

“To be relevant in the industry, you should be able to deliver on time, quality and as well as quantity so as to meet the required standards and be considered in during the public bidding process.

You should be well equipped with much information regarding the tender processes and where to address your grievances if at any point you feel cheated.” Said Kyambadde.

Kyambadde also cautioned local contractors to beware of middlemen who have been exploiting them.

“There is corruption in the tender process by these middlemen who make bidding expensive.”

The summit which will be running under the theme “Buy Uganda Build Uganda from a contractors’ perspective,” is aimed at presenting a strong boost for Uganda’s local contractors while promoting local participation. President Museveni is expected to be the chief guest at the event.

While giving his remarks at the event, Guster Bukenya a representative of Uganda Contractors and Providers said they seek to create a platform to develop skills that can enable local contractors be part of the procurement cycle.

Bukenya also said that, “Contractors can play a very important role in creating jobs for many individuals and enable social and economic development if given chance.”

Vincent Seruma, Manager Public and Corporate affairs at Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) revealed that URA supports the Buy Uganda Build Uganda policy and tipped contractors on the great business opportunities that come along with tax compliance.
