Minister Opendi to Address Parliament on Faulty Condoms Today
The state minister of health for general duties, Sarah Opendi yesterday asked parliament for more time to tender in an explanation today on a cache of Life Guard condoms that were recently recalled from the market.
Last week, two batches of these condoms were recalled by Marie Stopes after the National Drug Authority (NDA) discovered that over one million condoms that were faulty.
Speaking on the floor of parliament, Opendi said while she knew about the recall, she was not aware how condoms hit the market undetected.
“It is true that condoms were brought to this country, imported under Marie Stopes as one of our partners and it is National Drug Authority that later detected that the condoms were not fit,” Opendi responded.
As such, she promised to respond conclusively on the matter on Thursday.
“I don’t have information as to where the problem was that resulted into the condoms going to the market without any detection. So allow me to come tomorrow with a statement,” Opendi asked.
The minister’s response followed concerns by Kasambya County legislator Gaffa Mbwatekamwa who expressed concerns about Ugandans being exposed to Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
“My major concern is how these condoms moved to the market before the testing. And who is liable to people who would have contracted STIs, HIV and even pregnancies? ” Mbwatekamwa wondered.
