Lira Nuns Hail Kadaga for Supporting Religious Initiatives

Lira Catholic nuns have praised the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga for her committed support to religious programs.

The nuns under their umbrella body; Missionary Sisters of Mary Mother of the Church said they were delighted by Kadaga’s presence at their fundraising ceremony in Lira on Saturday.

“I thank God for the Speaker of Parliament who has exhibited faith by travelling all the way to Lira together with her MPs and staff to support our fundraising for the chapel,” Said Rev. Sr. Sophia Asimwe, the Superior General of the Congregation.

The Speaker traveled to Lira with the Parliamentary sports team members who boosted the event.

Sister Asimwe said the fundraising is aimed at raising funds for construction of bigger chapel to accommodate the growing number of nuns amounting to 320.

“When we started 49 years ago we were very few but now we have grown to 320 passed sisters and about 70 who are being formed,” said Asimwe

The chapel Asimwe added is considered as the congregation’s achievement to mark its’ 50 years of existence to be celebrated on November 12, 2020.

Their congregation Kadaga learnt, serves in Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan and Italy.

Moved with what she termed as ‘a worthy cause’ Kadaga contributed shs 10m on behalf of Parliament and urged MPs and staff to support the fundraiser in their capacities.

As part of the fundraiser, Parliament’s sports teams; football, netball and volleyball played with the respective teams from Lira Diocese where Parliament won all games except volley ball.

Lira residents who attended the games used an opportunity through their Woman MP, Joy Atim Ongom to appeal to Kadaga to reign over their quest for a blood bank.

“Madam Speaker we have had a problem of a blood bank. Lira district lacks one, we ask you to intervene, ” said Mrs Ongom.
