Kadaga insists that money for Kayunga-Kamuli bridge was “eaten”

The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has tabled evidence to prove that Shs 24 billion meant to construct the Isimba bridge that connects Kayunga to Kamuli district was swindled.

Kadaga’s move followed a statement by the minister of Energy Irene Muloni in which she claimed she had no knowledge of the alleged misappropriation of the money.

Kadaga said that cabinet was behind the move to sabotage parliament’s decision to investigate the missing Shs 24 billions and disclosed that a clique of people tried to frustrate Chinese International Water and Electric Corporation by forcing them to leave the country through courts of law.

“Hon. Members in Feb this year 2019 the CID requested the Attorney General to conduct a special audit on the procurement of MU/MV 2013/14 and the file number was CID/81142018 but nothing was done,” she said.

Kadaga said that in order to seal their deal to fail the construction of the bridge, they had even succeeded in halting the operation of Chinese firm and frozen its accounts .

“Those people whose names I forwarded to head of state attempted to force the managers of Chinese Water International and Electric Corporation out of the country,” she said.

MPs demanded for a special inquiry into this matter to bring the culprits to book.

Atkins Katusabe, the MP Bukonzo county, said: “We can’t make corruption an identity mark for our country and this is not business as usual. Enough is enough Parliament must act now.”

Alex Ruhunda Alex the MP for Fort Portal Municipality said it is not the first time billions of money have been misappropriated. He called for tough action against the culprits.

But Muloni dismissed allegations that cabinet is trying to fail the planned investigations into the matter and requested to table a formal statement on the progress of Isimba Kayunga – Kamuli bridge construction progress soon.
