Is KCCA FC’s Season Already A Failure

At the beginning of the 2019/2020 season, KCCA FC head coach Mike Mutebi set several targets for his club and among them was reaching the group stage of the Total CAF Champions League after citing it as one of the big clubs in Africa.

The Kasasiro Boys kicked off their CAF Champions League games by whipping out Namibian side African Stars with 4-3 win on aggregate to progress to the final qualification round.

However, the Uganda Premier League failed to show character which was much needed at this level and as a result they were knocked out of the competition by Angolan side Atlético Petróleos de Luanda to miss the money bracket.

The two sides settled for a goalless stalemate in the first leg game played in Angola and KCCA FC failed to capitalize at the home advantage in the second leg which ended in one-all draw to enable Atlético Petróleos de Luanda proceed to the group stage.

As a result, the ‘Our way’ side were dropped into the continent’s biggest club football competitions in CAF Confederation Cup where they had to play one home and away fixture against Algerian side Paradou AC to reach the group stage.

However, to many spectators’ surprise, KCCA again failed the hurdle after playing to a goalless draw at home in the first leg before being thumped 4-1 in the return leg to exit the competition.

KCCA FC have been known for their offensive and scoring ability especially under the guidance of Mike Mutebi but they managed only six goals in the six continental games played, scoring three at home and three goals away from home.

Their poor performance at the continent which was their priority this season has led many spectators to term their season as ‘failure’ despite being in its early stages.

In the league, their performances have not been satisfactory after managing only for wins, one draw and two losses including a heavy 3-0 defeat by BUL FC, from the seven games played.

However, they can still catch up in the league as they are capable of moving two points behind table leaders Vipers if they manage to win their five league games on hand although they failed the continental test which was their ideal priority.
