CCEDU asks Ugandans not to miss out on the voters’ register updating exercise

The Citizens’ Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU) has urged Ugandan not to miss out on having their details updated in the voters’ register ahead of the 2021 general elections.

The Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama on Thursday said updating of the national voters’ exercise that started on November 21 will end on December 11.

However, in a statement, CCEDU said that the 2021 general election will be the first poll since the 1995 constitution without any form of voter education at the time of the voter register update.

Never once did Uganda hold elections without any form of voter education at the time of a voter register update as is the case with the 2021 election,” CCEDU said in a statement.

The Citizen’s Coalition for Electoral Democracy in Uganda however urged Ugandans to take the initiative to ensure they disseminate information about the voters’ register updating exercise so that no one misses out.

“CCEDU implores the public and all radio, TV and online media to take it upon themselves to disseminate widely the information that the voter update process has started and encourage every Ugandan who is 18 years of age to go and update their details on the register.”

The civil society organisation asked members of the public to take interest in the number of polling stations in your locality and the number of voters that turn up for the update at each of those polling stations.

“It is important to know the polling station at which you will cast your vote. Also because you were on the register before, does not guarantee your name on the new register, therefore, go to your polling station and update your details.”

The Electoral Commission chairperson on Thursday said voters will not be allowed to change names, age and dates of birth in the voters’ register.

“For purpose of clarity, voters may only make necessary correction in regard to spelling mistakes, gender and a mismatch of photograph, as the case may be,” Justice Byabakama said.

“Registered voters will not be able to make changes to their age, date of birth, or include (new) additional names.”
