Entebbe Expressway Murder: Police Release Suspects

Police and sister security agencies on Saturday released five people who were recently arrested as part of the ongoing investigations into the murder that took place along Entebbe Express highway last month.

In the murder, two people, a businessman identified as Joshua Nteireho and his female friend Merina Tumukunde were gunned down under unclear circumstances.

Nteireho who was said to be a close relative to members of the first family made the case a high profile murder which required to be handled carefully.

Security agencies were tasked to investigate the murder and identify the suspects who would have gunned down the two in a most sophisticated manner on the high speed road and fled the scene with less trace.

Initially, police arrested one of their own officer identified as Davis Taremwa whose gun was found at the scene.

Taremwa who was a guard at hidden treasure hotel was said to be a close friend to Joshua Nteireho hence decided to escort him to millennium hotel in Zana where he was allegedly going to accomplish a business deal.

While following up on specific connected devices especially mobile phones, agencies arrested five suspects from Mbarara and Bushenyi to help in investigations.

They included Nteireho’s relatives, lawyer, a doctor, a lecturer and Merina Tumukunde’s husband who has since been questioned twice by the detectives.

The others were identified as Deus Kamugisha, Yafesi Nywijusha, Dr Segaine Eddie, Martin Rushegyera and Peter Ayebazibe.

Addressing the press in Kampala on Monday, Fred Enanga the spokesperson of the Uganda police force said that the suspects were questioned at special investigations unit in Kireka and later granted bail after recording statements.

They spent at least one week at the security facility while being questioned.

According to Enanga, Nteireho last communicated to the arrested group of people before being gruesomely killed.

“We gave them bond after thoroughly questioning them and we also established that they had business dealings with the late Joshua,” Enanga said.

However, the police officer Davis Taremwa remained under custody as investigations continue.
