Wild Fires Break Out on Mt. Kilimanjaro Slopes

Firefighters and locals have been fighting to stop a fire that broke out on Sunday on Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, which is Africa’s highest mountain.

The fire is said to have started in the Whona area a known resting place for climbers.

The Tanzania National Park Service official Pascal Shelutete says the body has been doing all they can to contain the fire.

“If the weather remains calm, we shall contain the fire very soon, thanks to the efforts of residents and students in the area”

Shelutete says the cause of the fire is not yet known, but believes it could have been started by tourists who tried to heat up their food.

Mountain Kilimanjaro has Africa’s highest peak at around 6,000 meters above sea level.

Annually, around 50,000 tourists climb the Mountain
