Uganda Red Cross comes to the rescue of flood victims in Ntoroko

The Uganda Red Cross Society has donated relief items to over 1400 people who were affected by floods in Kanara Sub-County, Ntoroko district.

The relief items included; tarpaulins, blankets, mosquito nets, jerrycans, cooking pots, plates, cups, spoons, knives, mats and bars of soap, among other key essential household items.

Among the beneficiaries were women, children, the elderly and disabled people who are considered highly vulnerable.

Uganda Red Cross partnered with other agencies in disaster response to complement efforts and synergies in meeting the needs of the people.

According to the officials, different disaster centres have been established and stocked in different regional districts to support emergencies and enable quick response.

While addressing the affected communities on Thursday, Uganda Red Cross secretary general, Robert Kwesiga appreciated partners who had worked with them.

He called upon different government line ministries to come in and boost the response through relocating the affected families.

“This problem of water is too big and cannot be solved by just giving out relief. We have given out relief kits that can enable these families to develop coping mechanisms,”he said.

The district assistant CAO Bonus Twijukye, appreciated Uganda Uganda Red Cross for coming in to support the affected families and called upon other partners to come in and offer any help they can.

“We thank you and pray that you continue supporting our efforts as usual,” Twijukye said.

Over 1000 families have been displaced by the floods. Locals said this condition last happened in this area in 1963 and water took four years to subside.
