Teachers Seek Assurance on Safety Ahead of School Opening

With just over a week to the reopening of schools for candidate classes, teachers under their umbrella Association UNATU have expressed concern about the rate at which some schools are implementing the set up guidelines in prevention of Covid19.

These through their National Chairperson Tumuhimbise Zadock noted that although schools were ordered to open on 15th October 2020, many have not yet reached the required set standard to accommodate both learners and teachers in this Covid19 pandemic era.

“UNATU previously proposed guidelines to Government that must be considered before re opening to safe guard learners and teachers. The Teachers are not yet convinced that the required preparation has been done,” Tumuhimbise noted.

The teachers now want Government to give them reassurance that before returning to classroom, their health, welfare and safety will be considered.

“As Uganda we cannot afford to ignore the teaching profession. The time is now for government to not only address the teachers’ concerns but also work with UNATU to devise strategies of making the profession more attractive motivate and retain quality teachers in the profession.”

 

The teachers say that the abrupt closure of schools which led to introduction of home schooling has made the society to recognize the hardships which teachers face while educating the young generation of this country.

”The home schooling situation has been so difficult for most people that they are still wondering ‘How do teachers do it?’ Some of the parents gave up the schooling after only one week with an excuse that they cannot take the stress any more. ”

Today Uganda will join the rest of the world to celebrate the World Teachers’ day under a theme ‘ Teachers leading in crisis reimagining the future’

In Uganda the celebrations are going to be held scientifically at State house Entebbe.

Teachers in various parts of the country will mark the day by engaging in a tree planting exercise as their contribution to environmental conservation.
