Rwanda Prosecution Wants Rusesabagina Charged Alongside FLN Fighters

Rwanda Prosecution has Monday announced that it will submit an application seeking for the merger of the case of Hotel Rwanda Hero Paul Rusesabagina with that of 16 captured National Liberation Front fighters (NLF) jailed in Rwanda.

Paul Rusesabigina told the court during his bail appeal hearing that he had helped form FLN but was never involved with military activities.

Rusesabigaina has been charged with 13 charges accounts including terrorism, Arson, and Robbery among others and is being held in a maximum security prison after the Appeals court denied him bail last week.

“I would like to inform you that we have in custody 16 FLN Fighters, including senior commanders who are suspected of taking part in the attacks in Southern Rwanda in 2018; the prosecution intends to submit a joint indictment of these 16 defendants together with Mr. Paul Rusesabagina,” Aimable Havugiyaremye, the Prosecutor General said at a press conference in Kigali.

“The prosecution will also file a request to court to merge this case together with the case of colleagues Callixte Nsabimana and Herman Nsengimana,” he said.

 

Callixte Nsabimana a former FLN spokesperson was arrested and repatriated from Comoros and is currently facing court while Herman Nsengimana was arrested from the jungles of Democratic Republic of Congo.

Havagiyarmye added that this is the common practice known as the principle of connectivity of offences, which is provided for in Rwandan laws

A renowned critic of Rwandan president Paul Kagame, Rusesabagina disappeared from Dubai on August 27, he was on 31st August paraded before the media in handcuffs.

Rusesabagina, was manager of the famous Hotel des Milles Collines in Kigali, where he sheltered more than a thousand Tutsis and moderate Hutus during the genocide to save them from extremist Hutus, had an international arrest warrant, and charged with crimes such as murder and kidnapping of Rwandan civilians.

The work of Rusesabagina, 66, inspired the famous film “Hotel Rwanda” (2004), based on the story of this influential Hutu businessman, married to a Tutsi woman.
