Ivan Kakooza, the founder of Nexus Bar and Restaurant in Najjera, Wakiso District, who died of COVID-19 on Thursday at Mulago National Referral Hospital, was constructing a posh residential house.
The storeyed structure is located in Kungu, Wakiso District.
Friends who on Saturday evening visited the premises for the vigil were awed by the structure which Kakooza hoped to complete in the next couple of months.
The red tile roof bungalow sits on almost an acre of land.
Many of Kakooza’s colleagues described him as industrious and workaholic.
The family said Kakooza will be laid to rest this Sunday in Kamengo, Mpigi District.
Medical personnel at Mulago Referral Hospital said Kakooza, who was admitted about a fortnight ago, had showed signs of improvement but died suddenly on Thursday night.
“The patient (Kakooza) was in the High-Dependency Unit (HDU) for a long time,” said a medical official, adding, “His condition changed suddenly yesterday afternoon and later passed on.”
Kakooza’s death left the entertainment industry in grief, with many praising his industriousness that saw him transform Nexus from a ‘kafunda’ to one of Uganda’s most prominent hangouts.
The signs of COVID-19 are fever, body weakness, cough, difficulty in breathing, loss of smell, loss of appetite and a sore throat.
Kakooza’s death brought Uganda’s COVID-19 death toll to 86.
