Deborah Mwesigwa Drops Out of Kamuli Race, Backs Kadaga

The long-time political rival of Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga in the Kamuli woman race, Deborah Mwesigwa has dropped her bid and declared support for the former.

Ms. Mwesigwa, who lost in the National Resistance Movement primary elections, had declared her intentions to stand on an independent ticket, like she did in 2016 general elections.

On Friday during a press briefing at Parliament, Mwesigwa accompanied by officials from Busoga Kingdom, said for the sake of harmony in both Busoga and NRM, she had decided to quit the race against the official candidate.

“I respect my party (NRM) and harmony in Busoga. I have therefore decided to drop my intentions to stand for Kamuli woman Member of Parliament as an independent candidate,” said Ms. Mwesigwa.

She also promised to join hands and campaign for Kadaga in the upcoming election.

“I have decided to join hands with my party’s official candidate, the right honourable Speaker Rebecca Kadaga to ensure a powerful victory,” she added.

Kadaga defeated Deborah Mwesigwa in the primary elections with 598 (95.5%) votes against the latter’s 551 (4.5%).

Kadaga will now face Forum for Democratic Change party’s Proscovia Salaamu-Musumba, the wife of State Minister of Urban Development, Isaac Musumba.

Her husband was defeated in the recent NRM primaries for MP Buzaaya County in Kamuli district. Musumba was reportedly rejected by voters for fighting Kadaga.
