Joel Ssenyonyi: “I told God I only want to sleep with my wife”

The spokesperson for the National Unity Platform, Joel Ssenyonyi, has opened up about his marriage with Fabrice Nagawa.

Until his marriage on June 27th this year, Ssenyonyi had for long said in several interviews that he was still a virgin.

Speaking to Wedding Chats in a YouTube interview, Ssenyonyi said that he is is not a virgin anymore, thanks to his wife Nagawa.

The former journalist said that he asked God to help him because he only wanted to sleep with his wife and he is happy he achieved it.

Ssenyonyi said: “For the record, I am not a virgin anymore and she is responsible. Sometimes people talk about it as if it was easy, but I prayed to God. I said God help me, the only person I want to sleep with is my wife. But I knew it will come with huge challenges given the kind of person I was and the spaces I occupied.”

Ssenyonyi said that keeping ‘pure’ until marriage was a journey of faith and constant work.

He said that he had preferred to get married much younger but he was not able to achieve that.

“I wanted to get married when I was much younger, but I guess it was one of those fantasy dreams. It wasn’t possible. I happened when I was 33 and I am glad it happened when it happened,” he said.

Why he got married to Nagawa

Why not her? Ssenyonyi said that they have been friends since 2014 and in his prayers, he always wanted to get married to a friend.

“I always wanted to get married to a friend and with this one, we clicked very well. We had our fights and we got back well until I realised that this is the one. I popped the question and I asked, ‘What have you been waiting for?’ and that was it,” Ssenyonyi said.

Nagawa on her part told Wedding Chats that she thinks Ssenyonyi was finding her attractive for the later years of their friendship but did not open up.

She said: “For some reason I have been seeing these good acts. Asking me out to coffee etc. Sometime last year, 2019, he popped the question and that is how the journey began. It was in February 2019.”

Nagawa said that they are still friends and that is what makes their relationship tick.

On getting married ‘scientifically’ during Covid-19, the couple said that this is not what they had expected but they had to make changes and get the wedding done.

“It was challenging (getting married in Covid-19) because we had to reduce the numbers. It came with people complaining on why we left them out but we did it because we had to. I have a big family and he has a bigger family, so it was a challenge. But we had to do it,” she said.
