NRM Elects CEC Leaders Today

The National Resistance Movement party, which is the biggest in terms of representation at Parliament and declared national membership, is going to polls on Thursday to elect the members of Central Executive Committee (CEC).

CEC is the highest policy organ of the party and is composed of the National Chairman, First National Chairman, 2nd National Vice Chairperson Female, Regional Vice Chairpersons and Chairpersons of Leagues. Leagues include veterans, youths, workers, women, diaspora and people with disabilities.

Today’s elections are focused on the 2nd National Vice Chairperson Female and Regional Vice Chairpersons since President Yoweri Museveni and Hajji Moses Kigongo have maintained their positions for Chairman and 1st Vice Chairman respectively unopposed.

Kigongo had competitors but they were convinced out of the race.

For the position of 2nd National Vice Chairperson female incumbent, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga was originally battling three competitors including junior lands minister, Persis Namuganza, Jane Frances Amongin and Deborah Kyazike Kinobe.

Two candidates including; Amongin and Kyazike withdrew from the race during campaigns of Wednesday.

According to CEC sources, Museveni had earlier proposed that Kadaga also remain unopposed but the latter rejected the idea and decided to face her competitors.

The Vice Chairperson North race is tight between the incumbent Sam Engola and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah. Other candidates are Timothee Okee and Dr. Samuel Oledo.

For Eastern region incumbent Mike Mukula is facing tight competition from former Tororo Municipality Member of Parliament, Sanjay Tanna. Another candidate on the race is John Robert Ekongot.

For Central Region the race is tight between Tourism, Wild Life and Antiquities state minister, Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi and businessman Moses Karangwa Kalisa.

The incumbent Hajji Abdu Nadduli was convinced out of the race after a legal opinion from the NRM Secretariat advised that civil servants are not supposed to be involved in partisan politics.

Nadduli is a senior presidential advisor.

In Kampala, incumbent Geoffrey Nyakaana is facing competition from businessman Salim Uhuru and former Rubaga North MP, Singh Katongole.

Karamoja Region Vice Chairperson attracted the candidature of Jimmy Lokoru Tebanyag who wants to unseat Simon Aleper.
