All Hospitals to Have Isolation Units for Suspected Covid-19 Cases – MoH

The Ministry of Health has come up with other measures geared towards the fight against covid-19. All hospitals are to put in place isolation rooms or units for people suspected to have covid-19, a move intended to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the senior Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Health, stressed that there is need to have these units as the virus is everywhere, evident from the surge in the Covid-19 cases recorded daily.

“Covid-19 can be in all places, villages inclusive. Therefore, all hospitals at all levels must have isolation or holding units for people with suspected Covid-19 symptoms,” he said.

Hospitals, public or private, he said, are therefore supposed to have the isolation units.

Ainebyoona added that the Ministry is working with various agencies to enforce the monitoring of health professionals and hospitals so that action is taken on those who do not follow the set guidelines.

It should be noted that the Namisindwa Covid-19 death left over 40 positive cases; as these were discovered through contact tracing according to the Ministry of Health. The deceased first visited a local clinic seeking medical attention where they interacted with numerous people, who have since tested positive.

Dr Ruth Aceng, the Heath Minister, explained that the more covid-19 patients admitted in hospitals, the less the attention from health workers as they will be overwhelmed and as such, “we shall, unfortunately, have more deaths.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry has also finalized a week-long training of ambulance operators as per proper handling of Covid-19 suspected and confirmed cases is concerned.

Private ambulance service providers, in particular, have been called on board to complement the existing government ambulances for quicker intervention in Covid-19 emergency situations.

“With 230 government ambulances, the Ministry requires 460 more due to the prevailing  covid -19 pandemic,” officials noted.

John Baptist Waniaye, the Commissioner Emergency Care Services at the Ministry of Health explained thus, “In all the regional hospitals, we shall need a minimum of 20 ambulances because these hospitals cover 10 districts on average.”

He also said that people need to be sensitized more about the virus.

Dr. Annet Alenyo Ngabirano, an emergency medicine expert, noted that trainees were skilled on ambulance ware use including a stretcher, oxygen masks and the need to sanitize all surfaces of the ambulance among others.
