Parliament approves creation of 46 new constituencies

Parliament on July 30 approved the creation of the long awaited new 46 counties amidst strong resistance from some of the legislators whose constituencies had not been split.

The fire spitting legislators led by Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko argued there was no fairness in allocating these new counties.

Presenting the new 46 counties on the floor of Parliament in a session chaired by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, the minister for Local Government Raphael Magyezi told the House that his ministry is scrutinizing more counties and once approved by cabinet will seek parliament’s approval.

Magyezi started by moving a motion to have three other new cities that were supposed to flag off their operation on the 1st of July 2021 to begin on the 1st of July 2020 to ensure their representation in the next  parliament.

The new cities to begin on the 1st of July this year are Hoima, Soroti and Lira.

The minister then presented another motion that saw the creation of more 31 Counties in addition to the motion of 15 counties that he tabled to Parliament early this month.

Some of the new counties are: Kiboga West, Buhweju, Lamwo East, Bugangaizi, Chekwi East, West Budama Central, Buwekula, Kwania, Kagoma North, Buyanja East, Ngariam, Agago West, Bukanga North, Bukimbiri and Nakaseke Central.

The others are: Kapir, Batiru, Kioga North, Namayingo South, Napore West, Bakora East, Elgon North, Samia Bugwe South, Namisindwa, Soi, T’oo County, Isingiro West, Ruhama East, Otuke East, Busiki North, Kyaka Central Mawogola among others.

The minister however said, the ministry is scrutinizing some other counties that will soon will be approved by cabinet once they meet the requirements.

The deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuzi in the same sitting presented another motion that saw the creation of Nakawa West in addition to each of the 10 new cities that will have a woman representative.
