Taskforce Meets to Discuss Implementation of Museveni Directives

Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda is this morning chairing a meeting of the National Covid19 Taskforce to discuss among others implementation of President Yoweri Museveni’s new directives on managing the pandemic.

The task force according to Uganda Police’s Chief Political Commissar AIGP Asan Kasingye, is meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister.

President Yoweri Museveni last night issued a set of new directives that will guide the nation to its gradual reopening.

The next phase of reopening the country Museveni said, will include resumption of public and private transport as well as partial reopening of schools for only candidate classes.

But all these steps have been tied to the condition that all Ugandans must start wearing face masks at all times to prevent the spread of Covid19.

As such, Museveni said in the coming fortnight, government will start distributing free face masks to all Ugandans aged 6 and above, after which the reopening will commence.

Museveni however, did not clarify on whether or not drivers and passengers that are able to obtain their own masks can get back on the road.

AIGP Kasingye said today’s meeting at the OPM will come out with guidance on such issues.

“Don’t drive your private car right now. The Police won’t allow you. There is a meeting about to take place this morning at OPM to guide further on the implementation of the new Presidential directives. Let’s be patient and wait for this guidance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kasingye said Police will have to put on hold the enforcement of the mandatory wearing of masks which was supposed to kick off today Tuesday, pending the mass distribution of masks by government.

“We are saying that those who are able to buy their own PPE should by them and use them…but for now we cannot start compelling people to wear masks in public because some will tell you they cannot afford them,” Kasingye told ChimpReports.
