COVID-19 Crisis: Private Cars to Wait for Right Masks to be Issued by June 2

The Joint Security Task Force has said private car owners will have to wait for two more weeks before being allowed back on the roads.

President Museveni on Monday night said private cars can carry three passengers as part of easing the lockdown restrictions.

This caused confusion in public with many wondering if they could drive around.

State House quickly posted a brief statement on the president’s Twitter handle, saying, “Measures to ease lockdown as addressed today will be activated only when each individual has received a standard mask distributed by the government of Uganda.”

The Joint Security Task Force spokesperson Fred Enanga said the masks will be delivered through the LC system by June 2, 2020, and will lead to the activation of business that include hotels, restaurants and general merchandise shops outside malls.

The government has also eased the lockdown on schools and tertiary institutions with candidates, as well as public and private transport.

“However, all these businesses and activities will effectively resume after the completion of the massive distribution of the free face masks,” said Enanga.

Officials said all non-essential service providers with private cars must wait for the right masks to be issued within 14 days. Vehicles with stickers continue to move

Enanga said all members of the Joint Security Task force have been tasked to “enforce the directive and further educate the public on the health and safety risks, as well as the potential consequences of not wearing face masks while in the public.”
