President Museveni has welcomed the contribution of People Power movement in combating the spread of Coronavirus.
Museveni was this past Wednesday visibly surprised to see People Power on the list of Good Samaritans who have raised resources to support the vulnerable people in Kampala.
The political movement contributed 50 bags of maize flour to the National Taskforce handling the pandemic.
“People’s Power has now joined the people,” said Museveni during the national address.
His humorous response attracted laughter from senior government officials in the room at State Lodge, Nakasero.
Bobi Wine has since declared intentions to stand for president in 2021.
Attempted murder
Meanwhile, Museveni reiterated his warning to politicians who are attempting to distribute relief food to the vulnerable people affected by the measures put in place by Government to combat the widespread of Coronavirus.
Addressing the nation about COVID 19 on Wednesday evening, Museveni said anyone caught distributing food will be charged with attempted murder and will not be granted bail.
“Again I heard of politicians who are trying to involve themselves in the distribution of food. Police should arrest those people and charge them with attempted murder because by undermining health emergency regulations. They are really endangering the lives of Ugandans,” he said.
He added that he travelled to Nakasongola on Tuesday but couldn’t stop anywhere on the way despite numerous requests by the people.
This, he said, he did it deliberately in order not to gather people which undermines the health emergency regulations put it in place to the prevent spread of COVID 19.
“Yesterday (Tuesday) I drove to Nakasongola as you know we have a lot of support in all those areas but I didn’t stop anywhere. People were stopping me but I refused to stop because when I stop, 50 people gather around me. By gathering, I am actually endangering them. A leader who doesn’t see this is really an enemy of the people of Uganda. A leader who doesn’t care about people’s lives, what sort of leader is he?” he asked.
In his previous address, Museveni stated that anyone willing to make any contribution in the fight against COVID 19 should hand it to the National Task Force chaired by Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda.
He termed politicians who would attempt to distribute relief food as “opportunists seeking cheap popularity.”
This week, many individuals and companies have made donations through the National Task Force.
One new case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Uganda yesterday.
This was out of the 214 samples tested at Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI).
This brought the total number of confirmed cases to 53 in Uganda.
Bodas
Meanwhile, Museveni issued a new directive ordering bodabodas to operate not beyond 2:00 pm.
“No bodaboda should be seen carrying a person or passenger. Even if it is your own baby, please do not do that. We said the bodabodas could only carry cargo. The bodabodas could help in carrying cargo especially door to door deliveries. But these bodabodas should stop at 2 (pm). We don’t want to see bodabodas on the roads after 2,” he ordered.
Furthermore, Museveni called on Landlords not to evict their tenants during period over failure to pay.
“Landlords who are trying to evict people because of rent, this should not be allowed.”
