Police Shoots Two in Kisoro Protest

Two people were on Thursday morning shot and seriously injured during a scuffle between traders at Hakatimba market in Kisoro municipality and police.

The injured have been identified as Francis Nyesigyire, 33, and one Aloise.

The former was shot in the leg and the latter in the neck.

The scuffle is said to have started when traders arrived early morning at the market only find that police had sealed it off.

As the traders piled up and started demanding to be let it, police opened fire to disperse them.

Hakatimba is a biweekly market in Kisoro Town operating Mondays and Thursdays.

However, at the start of this year, local officials decided to have it relocated to Rusiza, but the traders, who were given up to the first week of February to vacate,  refused to leave.

Captain Peter Mugisha, the Kisoro RDC yesterday condemned the excessive force used by police and revealed that the officer who opened fire has since been arrested.

He said the Muinicipality will be catering for the medical bill of the injured until they recover.
