UWEC Welcomes Two Lion Cubs On Christmas Day

The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre on Christmas Day welcomed two lion cubs, bringing the total number of lions at the Entebbe zoo to 9.

7-year-old Mutagamba, a lioness named after former Minister of Tourism the Late Maria Mutagamba gave birth to the two cubs.

According to Dr James Musinguzi the Executive Director UWEC, this is the best Christmas gift ever after losing Letaba a lion that was killed in September this year.

“The two cubs were sired by Letaba, which simply means his legacy is going to move on in addition to the other cubs that he left behind” he said.

Dr Musinguzi also revealed that the sexes of the young ones have not been established yet, adding that once they know, then the cubs will be named.

“We have to give time to the mother of the cubs to nurse them as we also monitor her health”.

Dr James Watuwa, a Veterinarian at UWEC said that they are planning to have the lions vaccinated and also medicated as preventive measures.

Lions are one of the major tourist attractions in Uganda not only in the zoo but also in all national parks and reserves.
