Our Top 10 Persons of the Year 2019

As curtains fall on the year 2019, let’s have a look at the 10 persons that shaped discourse, were very influential or simply warmed our hearts over the past 10months.

Corporal Hannington Agaba

He is an officer working as a Conservation Ranger at Semliki National Park under Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Early this month, Agaba braved heavy rains and floods in Bundibugyo to save lives of children, women and men that were stranded after their houses got flooded due to heavy rains.

He was pictured carrying and helping children to cross the heavily flooded roads.

Thankfully, his kind efforts didn’t go unnoticed and last week, he received a cash reward of 2million shillings from Capt Mike Mukula and was promised another reward by his employers.

Ezekiel and Ester

Esther and Ezekiel Mutesasira met with President Yoweri Museveni

Ezekiel and Ester Mutesasira, are the Ugandan musical duo that won the first ever East Africa got Talent music competition in October and brought home $50,000 (Sh 184m).

The two song birds aged 11 years and 14 years made Uganda proud when they sang their hearts out and beat their counterparts from the five East African countries. The two are planning to build an orphanage for less privileged children with some of the money they received.

Halimah Nakaayi and Joshua Cheptegei

The two athletes reached new heights this year winning gold medals for Uganda at the IAAF World Athletics Championship Doha Qatar.

Cheptegei won the10,000m finals for men and brought home $67,000 (241m) while Nakaayi won a gold medal in women’s 800m finals and brought home $60,000 (sh218m). For putting Uganda on the world map, we celebrate you and every other sports personnel that participated, won any medals for Uganda in 2019.

AIGP Asan Kasigye

He is the Uganda Police Force Chief Political Commissar who this year outdid himself in bridging the divide between the police force and the general public using social media.

Kasingye, who has now become the face of the police has since raked over 76,000 followers on twitter alone.

He was also voted President of Ugandans on Twitter (UOT).

Rebecca Kadaga

Speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga

She has been the speaker of parliament since 2011 and has definitely done a good job as the first female speaker in Uganda.

This year, she has been critical and alert in following up corruption cases. We celebrate her for adding his voice to Ugandans that want to save Murchison falls from being turned into an electricity generating dam

Frank Tumwebaze

He is young, vibrant, knowledgeable and engaging cabinet minister.  He has been the minister for ICT since 2016 and without a doubt, has transformed the ICT sector into a vibrant one. In the most recent cabinet reshuffle, Tumwebaze has been transferred to the Ministry of Gender and social Development replacing Hon Janat Mukwaya. As you start on your new role at the ministry of Gender, we wish you the best and hope to see you use ICT to solve social problems

Bobi Wine

He is a musician turned politician, a fearless youth and a political influencer. He is the current member of parliament for kyandodo East and the lead of a political pressure group People Power. He has won several international awards for his role in Uganda’s politics. He bring new energy and a new phase in the Uganda politics, Kyagulanyi makes it to our favourite people list

Minister Jane Aceng/ Dianna Atwiine

We celebrate Minister Jane Aceng from Ministry of health for leading a vibrant team led by the permanent secretary Dianna Atwiine. They successfully carried out the measles- rubella campaign. Were able to prevent and manage a major Ebola and cholera attack. We celebrate the two for their administrative skills and for promoting good health in Uganda
